Erectile Dysfunction (ED) is the inability to achieve and maintain an erection needed for sexual intercourse. It is estimated that approximately one in every ten adult males suffers from ED on a long-term basis. Erectile Dysfunction symptoms may vary based on age and multiple factors. We have to understand the condition in-depth to self-diagnose and get treatment options.
What is Erectile Dysfunction (ED)?
Erectile Dysfunction (ED) is the inability to obtain and maintain a firm enough erection for sexual intercourse. According to estimates, one out of every ten men will develop ED at some point in his life. It is critical to recognise that, in most cases, ED is a symptom of a larger, underlying problem. ED is not considered normal at any age and may be associated with other issues that interfere with sexual intercourse, such as lack of desire and orgasm and ejaculation problems.
What is the Cause of Erectile Dysfunction (ED)?
A variety of factors can contribute to ED, including:
- Vascular disease, such as atherosclerosis, can cause the blood supply to the penis to become blocked or narrowed (hardening of the arteries).
- Neurological disorders (including multiple sclerosis): Nerves that send impulses to the penis can be damaged as a result of a stroke, diabetes, or other causes.
- Psychological states include stress, depression, a lack of brain stimulation, and performance anxiety.
- Trauma: An injury may contribute to erectile dysfunction symptoms.
ED can also be caused by chronic illness, certain medications, and a condition known as Peyronie’s disease. Prostate, bladder, and colon cancer operations may also be contributing factors.
Erectile Dysfunction Symptoms
The primary erectile dysfunction symptomis the inability to obtain or maintain an erection for sex. Symptoms of erectile dysfunction may include:
- Having difficulty getting an erection
- Having difficulty maintaining an erection
- Decreased sexual desire
When Should You See a Doctor?
When you have erectile dysfunction, you should consult your doctor. Proceed with clinical diagnosis if
- You’re worried about your erections or you’re having other sexual issues, such as premature or delayed ejaculation.
- You have diabetes, heart disease, or another known medical condition that may be associated with erectile dysfunction.
- You have additional symptoms in addition to erectile dysfunction.
Treatment for Erectile Dysfunction
Treatment is determined by the cause. Take your medication and follow your doctor’s instructions if it is caused by uncontrolled blood sugar and high blood pressure. If your doctor has ruled out all other possibilities, he or she may prescribe Sildenafil (brand name Viagra), tadalafil (brand name Cialis), or vardenafil (brand name Levitra). These medications are taken orally and help you maintain an erection.
These medications are not suitable for everyone. If oral medications aren’t an option for you, your doctor may suggest alprostadil. Alprostadil is a prostaglandin E derivative. It can be injected into the penis or inserted into the urethra as a tiny suppository (the hole at the end of the penis). Your doctor will assist you in determining which treatment is best for you.
When taking ED medication, follow your doctor’s instructions. A man usually takes 1 tablet 30 minutes to 1 hour before he intends to have sex. Sildenafil lasts 4–8 hours, vardenafil lasts up to 8 hours, and tadalafil lasts up to 36 hours. You should not take more than one dose in a 24-hour period. Tadalafil and vardenafil tablets are available in doses of 2.5 mg, 5 mg, 10 mg, and 20 mg. Sildenafil is available in 25 mg, 50 mg, and 100 mg tablets.
Even if you take the medication, you will still require physical and mental stimulation as well as the desire to have an erection. If your first dose does not work, contact your doctor. Your doctor may advise you to increase the strength of your tablet. If blocked blood vessels are found in the pelvis relating to the blood supply of the penis, balloon angioplasty may be recommended to help to open up the blood supply. ED can be improved 70% of the time depending on the location and anatomy.
Making healthy lifestyle choices and managing any existing health conditions are the best ways to prevent erectile dysfunction in Singapore. As an example: Manage diabetes, heart disease, and other chronic health conditions in collaboration with your doctor. Regular checkups and medical screening tests should be scheduled with your doctor. Stop smoking, limit or avoid alcohol consumption, and avoid using illegal drugs.
